Grassroots Season Opener - Epic Turnout

This is one of my favorite events on the east coast. From the curated group of cars, the event location and even down to the way the cars are spaced out. This is event is spectacular. You know I'm always down for a well orangized event. I don't think it gets better then this... If you know of one, drop me the details and I'll make sure I go.

I learned from last time to get there early. Its really cool seeing the setup process. What start as a huge empty field is turned into one of the coolest displays of cars over the next few hours. They bring the groups in phases each hours prepping them in the outer lot.

I found myself running back a forth from the outer prep lot and the inner event area. Both areas provided some great shots. I find once the main show opens its harder to get the long sightline shots. So this is one of those SEMA/Tokoy Auto Salon be preparred to walk to cover everything and for me thats what I did.

Now I definitely spend a lot time hunting out all the JDM cars, but this event is so much more. With RWBs, Exotics, Euros and a handful of really rare cars. After last year I had a better idea of how I wanted to shoot the event. So I started putting my 70-200mm to work

After being back on the east coast for a year. I've found that the NY/NJ area has some of the best turnout for events. Now, I'm not saying the other state don't have cool cars, they do. But the pull that the NY/NJ shows have is amazing.

Now this event allows me to shoot both the open, unobstructed shots that are so hard for me to get, but always end up as my favorite pics. Grassroots reminds me of what I miss of SoCals cars scene. A dense grouping of super clean, beautiful cars with owners that just love to get together and talk about their cars and the culture.

For me, one of the ways I can how good the event is with how much time I spend just talking. Not shooting pics or vid. but just hanging out talking. I found myself going from section to section of the feilds and finding people or groups that I knew. It's always great to just talk cars as much as I see and shoot, no matter how many places I travel and cars I see. I love it when I able to just take a moment and talk cars.
